Alone Together: Hostiles

Kill. Breed. Evolve.
The infected have a cycle—and it’s changing everything.
Three months after Captain Dillion Hawkins and Roland Donovan secured the survivors in Tallahassee, the rules of survival are shifting. It was hard enough when the infected only wanted to tear you apart. Now they’re adapting—and with every mutation, the line between humanity and monstrosity grows thinner.
But the sane are just as dangerous. A radical change on the planet is fanning the flames of fanaticism. Survivors are fleeing and falling victim to the fanatical demands. Survivors are being forced to choose sides, and whispers of rebellion are echoing through the ranks.
With winter closing in and threats pressing from all directions, Dillion and Roland face impossible choices. Which battles are worth fighting—and which lives are worth the cost?
In a world that refuses to stop evolving, survival may no longer be enough.
To get you all into the mindset of the post-apocalyptic world, I will be comparing and contrasting my series with the series of the great Molly Macabre on Birds with Words the weekend prior to release! Don’t miss the LIVE episode June 13th at 8PM hosted on YouTube.
Alone Together: Hostiles is shaping up to be a massive expansion to the world you’ve come to know. I wanted to share a few quotes from the book, and some reviews from my early readers.
“Fitzgerald has a great voice in describing death.” -Julie Hutchings
Death is a central theme within my Alone Together series. To get told I have a “great voice” from my editor who specializes in the Horror genre, I was ecstatic.
“This is probably the most intense, graphic, disturbing, heart wrenching book yet in the series. I said above I had to take several breaks because the graphic detail.” -One Eyed Monster
I’ve grown as a writer. I have identified what makes my voice unique, and that is providing sensation within my scenes. Alone Together: Hostiles ramps this up. I want you smelling, tasting, feeling, and hearing every moment within the pulse pounding moments.
“Evolution doesn’t care about our odds.” -Alone Together: Hostiles
I hope you recall the prologue to Alone Together. I’ve hinted that there are no accidental details included, and it’s time one of those major hints comes to life.
Birds with Words, Episode 17: Blake Myers
Welcome back to Birds with Words! Today we have a guest that has been a long time coming. Blake Myers is one of the core members to the Dark Veil Society, and the author to my favorite read of 2025, Who Put Bella in the Wych Elm?
Walpurgis Words
Hopefully you’ve watched my podcast with Blake (above) so this won’t be a surprise for you…
Walpurgis Words for Literacy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, incorporated in Ohio and founded by a collective of indie horror and dark fantasy authors from around the world—united under The Dark Veil Society. We believe that literacy is transformative, and that the darkest, most imaginative stories often come from the youngest voices.
Our mission is to support high school students as readers and writers. Through our annual Halloween Horror Flash Fiction Student Contest, school and library book donation program, and author mentorship initiatives, we provide the resources and recognition that young authors deserve. Our annual fundraising drive runs from April 1st through Walpurgis Night—because we believe in the power of stories, told in the dark.
Support the future readers and writers today.
The Tellest Friday
The Tellest Friday is a blog and newsletter for finding new Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror authors. Back in February I appeared and shared some behind the scenes commentary on the Alone Together series. You can read up on how Alone Together came to be in the link below.
A Month of Tears
Listen, I don’t like to vent about personal events. In fact, I’m burying this under all my book details. February was rough for my family.
My in-laws experienced a devastating loss. My wife’s grandmother went in for an unrelated checkup and discovered one of her kidneys was covered with stage two cancer tumors. Everyone was hopeful since she found it early and was able to schedule the surgery for a week later.
She did not survive.
The entire family shifted from preparing to help in recovery to shock and mourning.
I didn’t get to say much, and I felt almost like a stranger among my extended family. I only knew the woman for seven years, but I recognized her contribution. She loved my wife like a daughter, taught her that family is not always by blood but sometimes the family you make during the journey of life.
She loved her grandchildren unconditionally, and that is more than anything I could ask for. Now I have to be comforted in knowing my daughter got to sit on her lap and read a book the day before her surgery.
I can only be thankful of the time we had with her. For her contribution, and unconditional love she shared.
“The world's still the same. There's just less in it.” - Captain Jack Sparrow
February was a tough month, and it got harder as it went on.
I never explicitly stated what I do outside of writing other than mention it is cybersecurity related. My company went through a reorganization, and the structure change impacted my career. I was given 60 days to find a new role or be separated from the company.
This news hit me like a brick. It’s hard to think of anything other than my medically complicated daughter with news like this.
“That’s the way it is and I don’t make the rules. The rules come from downtown.” - Glengarry Glen Ross
I am fortunate enough that I retained employment with the same company, but in a different role. Still mentally took a toll on us, but as I like to say: the horrors persist, but so do I.
I’ve been preparing for Tampa Bay Screams in May, which means ordering physical copies to sell while vending there. I was very excited to get new prints of Sinner’s Pass since the re-release. All 12 paperback copies I ordered had massive misprints in them. Random letters were replaced with black splotches. Some pages were only missing a few letters; some were missing dozens.
I double checked the source file and I checked the previewer. Nothing. This was a true misprint from the printer.
Now all 12 copies need to be returned, and reordered. Unfortunately, I don’t think I’ll get paperbacks in time for the event. I’ll take hardcovers, but I know the price point for hardcovers keeps most readers away.
February was a tough month. On top of everything, my family fought off Flu type A which gave us pneumonia. That cough lingered for me all the way through March.
I’ll say it again, February was a tough month for us.
